Following the filing of a lawsuit by Tony La Russa over fake tweets made in his name, Twitter co-founder Biz Stone has taken to the company blog to respond to the suit and detail Twitter’s future plans to combat false accounts.
We do recognize an opportunity to improve Twitter user experience and clear up confusion beyond simply removing impersonation accounts once alerted. We’ll be experimenting with a beta preview of what we’re calling Verified Accounts this summer.
To begin with Twitter will only verify accounts of public officials, public agencies, famous artists, athletes, and other well known individuals at risk of impersonation. So for regular users this will not mean that they will proof who they are.
